Facial Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

What has happened to my face over the years?
As we grow older, our face definitely goes through some significant changes including the skin losing its elasticity. Noticeable signs of aging also begin to appear such as deep creases around the mouth, loose skin in your jowls and neck area, and “age spots” may appear. Some of these changes happen prematurely and are caused by factors such as long-term exposure to the sun, daily stressors, and other external factors such as smoking for many years.  Even healthy, active people can look older than they actually are.

What is a facelift; what can it do for me?
Rhytidectomy (facelift) is a surgical procedure that reduces the signs of aging by tightening and firming up the skin and muscles of your face and neck. Facelifts are good solutions for both men and women who would like to restore their youthful beauty to the face and neck area. A facelift will not stop the clock, but it can certainly make you look younger than you do now.

How is it performed?
Facelifts are performed different ways by different surgeons. San Francisco Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Randall Weil will sit with you and discuss the many facial augmentation options available today. You and he will discuss your desires and a plan of treatment will be created just for you. Generally, the procedure involves using local anesthesia with sedation. However, some patients will have the cosmetic surgery under general anesthesia. Dr. Randall Weil will separate the skin from the underlying layers of muscle and fat. After removing the excess fat, he will tighten the facial muscles and membranes. Then, he will pull the skin back and cut away the extra skin. This surgery may take 3-5 hours.

What is recovery from a facelift like?
The time you need and the way in which you recover from cosmetic surgery will, of course, vary from patient to patient. However, generally speaking, most patients are able to return to work between 10 and 14 days from the day of surgery. Swelling and bruising may take up to three weeks to fully disappear. You will be advised against strenuous activity for two weeks. Exposure to the sun should be avoided altogether.

I have seen people with that “pulled” look following a facelift; is that inevitable?
This depends on your surgeon’s experience and skill with the facelift procedure. Dr. Randall Weil’s work will not leave you with that startled, pulled look to your face.
